Many people believe that vegans have an unhealthy diet because they can’t get B12 in it. These people believe that B12 only comes from meat and that it’s necessary to eat meat to get this vitamin.
This is not true or a fact.
So what is B12 and why is it so important?
Vitamin B12, also known as Cobalamin, is one of the eight B vitamins. It ensures proper functioning and health of nerve tissue, brain function, and red blood cells. It is needed in the metabolism of every cell in the body.
Symptoms of B12 deficiency are anemia, depression, confusion, memory loss, and fatigue. This is a very important Vitamin, and a lack of B12 causes serious health problems that are in some case irreversible.
Almost 40% of the population in the United States is deficient in Vitamin B12! That 40% of the population of the United States are not vegans, they are people who eat meat and dairy every day.
What people fail to realize is that B12 deficiency happens to everyone, not just vegans. In fact, vegans have less issues with B12 deficiency than meat eaters do. This is because meat doesn’t actually have B12 in it. Farmers inject Vitamin B12 into their animals before they are slaughtered for food.
Basically people think vegans have deficient diets because they take B12 supplements, when in reality meat eaters have the deficient diets because they have to give a B12 injection to a cow, and then eat the cow.
B12 comes from the soil. If you are eating organic produce with some dirt on them, you might be getting B-12 from that. That is how we would have gotten B12 back in the day. Also back in the day, animals would have gotten B12 from grazing and eating grass. Now they never even see grass in their entire lives, they are fed GMO corn and soy beans, an unnatural diet for them.
Every single person, whether they are vegan or not, should be either taking a B-12 supplement, injection, or eating foods that are fortified with B-12.
We live in a world where everything is sanitized and we do not take care of our soil, so we have to compromise and just take a supplement. It is no big deal to take 1 supplement a day, but if you don’t want to take supplements you can just eat fortified foods such as soy milk, cereals, granola bars, nutritional yeast, and more.
Normal B-12 levels should be between 500-900, the best way to find out if you are deficient or not is to take a blood test. You might already be getting enough B-12 in your diet if you are eating lots of fortified foods, and then there would be no need to take supplements.
However, if you are a raw vegan, or eating no processed foods, it will be hard for you to get B-12 in your diet if you aren’t eating any fortified foods, so those people should take a supplement.
B12 is a very important Vitamin that no one should overlook. It is vital for our overall health and wellbeing, and everyone should be making sure that they are getting enough in their diet, whether they are vegan or not.
