What is Nutritional Yeast?

What is nutritional yeast? Nutritional Yeast is often referred to as a spice, but as the name suggests, it’s a type of yeast.

Nutritional yeast is grown on molasses. After it’s done growing, it’s harvested and washed. Then it’s dried with a high temperature to deactivate it. Deactivating it is what makes it different from other yeast.

I’ve heard a few people say that yeast isn’t vegan because it’s a “living” organism. However, yeast actually comes from the fungi family, so it’s technically more similar to mushrooms than animals.

Nutritional yeast comes in either flake form, or powder form (which is just the flakes blended up).

It’s up to you what you prefer. It’s normally a dull yellow.

How To Use Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional yeast is very easy to use. You don’t need to cook it or anything – all you do is sprinkle it on your meals.

You can use it during the cooking process, or afterward as a seasoning. I

t goes well with warm or cold meals. If you’re just using enough for a seasoning (such as sprinkling some on pasta), a tablespoon goes a long way.

How To Store Nutritional Yeast

Just store this in an airtight container or bag. It is fine stored in the cupboard, but some brands might recommend that you store it in the fridge.

Health Benefits of Nutritional Yeast

Most vegans use nutritional yeast for the taste, but it actually has a lot of health benefits too!

Nutritional yeast is full of B-vitamins, and it’s often enriched with b12. This makes it a great food for vegans to eat since you can’t get b12 from other plants.

It’s also full of folic acid, zinc, and selenium. Surprisingly, it has a lot of protein too!

Additionally, it’s totally gluten-free. There are only 10 calories per tablespoon, so it’s very low-calorie.

It works great for those looking to season their food with something other than salt.

How Does It Taste?

It can be hard to describe the flavor of nutritional yeast to someone who’s never had it before. Lots of vegans say that nutritional yeast makes everything taste like cheese.

While it certainly does have a cheesy flavor, it doesn’t really taste like cheese itself.

Some good words to describe nutritional yeast would be savory, nutty, and cheesy. It has a very strong flavor, so don’t start out with too much if it’s your first time using it.

Where To Buy Nutritional Yeast

You should be able to buy nutritional yeast at any health food store. Some grocery stores might even have it in their “natural foods” section if they have one.

You can even buy it online from places like Amazon if you’re interested.
