Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics
Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics – Most people think that being a vegan is simple. It’s all just eating vegetables and avoiding the consumption of meat.
But being a vegan is more than that. In fact it’s a lifestyle that we call veganism.
I get asked quite often what is the difference between being vegan and vegetarian?
Vegan vs. Vegetarian – a small discussion
Both vegans and vegetarians do not eat meat. However, some vegetarians consume dairy products and eggs. Vegetarian diets are typically based on its health benefits or maybe religious or political indicators.
While being a vegetarian is typically for diet reasons, being vegan is a lifestyle.
A vegan avoids all animal products. These include eggs, dairy, even honey as they come from bees. Vegans also avoid animal-based products like wool, leather, and silk. Generally speaking, vegans have stronger beliefs with regards to their diet which extends into ethical reasons.
Most vegans feel very strongly about animals and that they must be protected under the same laws as humans are.
So when it comes to cosmetics same care goes towards animals…..Use only products that are not tested on animals.
This is why we love the LUSH fresh handmade cosmetics line.
LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics – Background
Lush fresh handmade cosmetics was started in the 1970s by Mark Constantine and Liz Weir. Mark was a trained trichologist who studied the health of scalp and hair. Liz was a beauty therapist who met Constantine in a hair and beauty salon in Poole, England. Their friendship lasted for years and eventually they decided to start their own business by selling natural hair and beauty products. They set up their work in their homes creating products made with natural and fresh ingredients for the hair and skin.
The 80s came and Mark read about a woman named Anita Roddick who just started The Body Shop. Mark thought that Anita sounded like-minded, so he called her and presented her some of his products. She handed in an order for £1,200 to start with. From then on, Mark and Liz were able to develop phenomenal products for The Body Shop and became the shop’s biggest supplier for over a decade. At that point, The Body Shop had decided to buy their product formulas.
When the Body Shop bought out their product formulas Mark and Liz were prohibited from opening another retail shop for five years. Instead they setup a mail order cosmetics company and named it Cosmetics-to-go. The company operations was not without stress and complication and eventually ended. The company was sold and the product formulas and the name Cosmetics-to-go was taken over by the new owner.
Mark and Liz together with their noble staff spent what little money they had left on vegetables and fresh fruits from the market. They hand made products in a little shop upstairs and sold their products downstairs. They also came up with fragrances for their products. They launched a competition for consumers to introduce the company to a new name. The name Lush was suggested which defines as fresh, green and verdant. They all thought and agreed that the name LUSH fitted perfectly.
Since 1996, over 150 shops have branched out and supplied by two cosmetic kitchens in Canada. More and more products were made, like hand and body lotions. Their products are not packed and preserved. Most of their products are naked, meaning they do not use packaging because they want it to be environmentally-friendly. They have convinced their suppliers to source out 100% recycled bottles and pots to avoid virgin plastic, save bottles and reduce energy on bottle production.
The company thought of the annual LUSH prize to reward the individuals who are working in the field of cruelty-free scientific research, and bringing awareness to help bring an end to animal testing. The annual £250,000 prize fund is awarded to campaigners, scientists, lobbyists, training specialists and young researchers who work to replace animal testing with methods that are more humane and effective.
