How to Introduce Veganism to Your Children
More and more people are choosing to follow a vegan lifestyle every day. Some of these people have children who were not raised vegan.
This blog post is for any parents out there who are struggling with how to introduce veganism to their kids. Whether your child is 3 years old, or 7 years old, you can follow these suggestions and show them how compassion is the way to go.
Read Them Vegan Books
A great way to introduce veganism to your children is to read them a book about animal rights or veganism. There are many vegan children books out there. Here is a list of over 100 books that you can choose from to read with your child: Children’s Books on Veganism.
One of my favorite books is “That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals: A Book About Vegans, Vegetarians, and All Living Things”
Watch Movies With Them
Children naturally form bonds with animals and they feel affection towards them. This is one of the major reasons why so many children’s stories and movies have animals as their main characters.
Watch movies with your kids that carry a message of compassion and empathy towards animals.
Disney movies are great for this. Some examples are: The Bee Movie, 101 Dalmatians, Bother Bear, and Bambi.
Introduce Them to Other Vegan Kids
Once your child knows about veganism, it’s important for them to know that they are not alone!
They might be the only vegan at their school or in their class, which can be isolating for them in some cases. Show them examples of other thriving vegan kids their age on youtube. There are many families that record their children and put it online to show everyone how easy it is to raise kids vegan, and how they can thrive.
Maybe your kids can connect with them and they will feel less alone.
Vegan Potlucks
Go online and see if there are any other vegans in your area. Check Facebook for groups where you might be able to find other vegan parents that have children. Maybe your kids can connect and have playdates.
Another great way for your kid to meet other vegan children is to check out vegan potlucks or meet-ups in your area. You never know who will be there, and it’s a great way for your kid to taste a variety of vegan food and meet other people that eat the same way as them.
Do Vegan Activities With Them
Instead of taking your kids to the zoo, or to an aquarium, why not go to a farm sanctuary? There they will be able to connect with the animals in real life.
Other fun activities to do would be fruit picking. Check if there’s a U-Pick strawberry patch in your area, or an apple orchard you can go to. The options are endless.
